Luthiery Projects

This page is an index to my luthiery projects. I have a long list to work through, but let’s start at the very beginning (it is a very good place to start, after all).

A beautifully figured black walnut classical guitar back

Restoring My Very First Guitar

Pictured above is the back view of my very first guitar. My dad brought it home to me when I was about 6 years old, which means I have owned it for over fifty years. The wood of the back, sides and neck all have beautiful figuring and excellent resonance. But the top had acquired quite a bit of damage, and the guitar could no longer hold string tension.

The truth is, it was already quite old when I got it, and the years have not been as kind as they might have been. But I learned to play on this guitar, and it has a very special attachment for me; it is after all my very first guitar. So when the top became so badly split and chipped that it was beyond repair, there was no choice but to replace it.

After carefully removing the top, other structural issues came to light; I will need to address them along the way.

First step though was to decide what kind of wood to use for the new top.
